FTC Spyware Workshop - April 19th, 2004

Monitoring Software on Your PC: Adware, and Other Software

    April 18th, 2004 - 11:00 AM
  • Warm and humid in Washington as those wishing to help defeat the infiltration of spyware meet to find some common ground in fighting this very serious war.
    April 18th, 2004 - 11:00 PM
  • I spent a long day today talking to some very smart people. Most of whom have some first hand experience helping consumers deal with mysteryware. I owe thanks to the feedback and insight from
Rob Cheng and Dave Methvin from PC Pitstop,
    Steve Reutter from Pest Patrol,
    Mike Healan of SpywareInfo.com,
Robin and Paul Laudanski from ComputerCops.org,
special guest experts Eric L. Howes and Ben Edelman.
We also enjoyed the company of a few other people who would rather remain nameless.

Everyone I spoke with today is very sincere in their efforts to help consumers and I look forward to comments we'll be hearing at tomorrows FTC workshop.
    April 19th, 2004 - 1:30 PM
  • The FTC welcomed a group I estimate at 200+ to its 2004 Spyware Workshop. There were no heated debates but a lot of discussion that made it very clear Spyware is a big problem that isn't going to go away.
    April 19th, 2004 - 11:15 PM
  • It was a long day listening to everyones thoughts on spyware and the industry fears of any kind of legislation.
FTC Commissioner Thompson discussed possible responses to Spyware.

The real surprise tonight was a press release my news bot sent me. The Consortium of Anti-Spyware Technology Vendors ( we are not a member ) "proudly" announced their newest member: New.net. Did we turn the clocks back to April 1st?
